Dishwasher features

Today’s dishwashers are so rich in features that it can be helpful to know which ones particularly to look out for and the benefits they bring to your dishes and your lifestyle.

  • Quiet operation is more crucial than ever in modern kitchens that tend to open out onto living or dining areas. The decibel (dB) level is displayed on the energy label of every new machine so look for models that are below 50dB. LG’s latest D1484 14 place setting dishwasher operates at a library-quiet 38dB. It also features LG’s True Steam technology, which offers the option to use 95°C steam to help remove stubborn dried-on food and stains (A+++, 9-litre water consumption, 38dB, £535).

  • Intelligent technology takes the guesswork out of choosing a program. Sensors detect how dirty the dishes are and automatically set the correct temperature, program and duration, ensuring optimal water, detergent and energy is used for each wash. Whirlpool’s Green Generation ADP 8693 A++ PC 6S WH 13 place setting dishwasher boasts PowerClean technology with intelligent sensors to save water, energy and time (A++, 11-litre water consumption, 42dB, £549).

  • Flexible interiors will mean that you can fit in everything you need to wash, no matter what shape or size. So, look for baskets that can be adjusted, inserts that can be folded or removed as required and racks that move up and down, even when fully loaded. The AEG F99015vi0p ProClean built-in dishwasher holds 12 place settings, while adjustable and foldable baskets mean you can fit in pots and pans of any size and its double rotation satellite spray arm ensures cleaning from all angles (A+, 10-litre water consumption, 39dB, £799.99).

  • Specialist programs will help keep your dishes in great condition – look for gentle glassware programs, intensive high-heat programs for getting ovenware and pans clean, and quick-wash programs for when you need lightly soiled dishes cleaned in a hurry. New from Grundig, the GNF4180 dishwasher has capacity for 13 place settings and features a Hygiene+ program that increases the temperature to over 65°C for 36 minutes, killing 99.9% of all bacteria. Available from Currys (A++, 6-litre water consumption, 43dB, £499.

  • Capacity is measured by ‘place settings’. This is quaintly defined as a plate, side plate, bowl, teacup and saucer and corresponding cutlery. As such, it doesn’t take into account pasta bowls or the outsize plates that many of us use daily. However, flexible interiors (see above) will accommodate these items and the number of place settings is still a useful means of comparing different models. Available exclusively from John Lewis, the Hotpoint FDEF51110P Signature dishwasher features intelligent sensor technology and holds an impressive 15 place settings (A+, 11-litre water consumption, 42dB, £399).

  • Delayed start is useful if you have access to less expensive rates of electricity, as you can then program the dishwasher to start late at night or in the early hours,” says Juliana Sado of Whirlpool. Amica’s ZMW646BE/WE 60cm dishwasher is available in black and white, it holds 14 place settings and features up to 24-hour delay start, six wash programs and five temperature settings (A++, 11-litre water consumption, 45dB, £349.99).
